This course is an ideal resource for anyone interested in learning more about a Jungian approach to masculine psychology. We explore masculine initiation, the four archetypal quadrants, and the integration of masculine and feminine principles.
Explore the path to mature masculinity through Jungian depth psychology
Contemporary culture is facinga crisis of uninitiated men – Jung's depth psychology and the fourfold structure of King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover offer a framework for genuine masculine development beyond patriarchal domination or masculine shame
This course provides a depth psychological framework for understanding masculine maturation at both individual and cultural levels. The archetypal structures Jung identified offer precise vocabulary for what happens when masculine power operates without psychological development. Every mature masculine archetype has a bipolar shadow: the King becomes Tyrant or Weakling, the Warrior becomes Sadist or Masochist, the Magician becomes Manipulator or Naïve Innocent, the Lover becomes Addict or Impotent. These are not rhetorical labels but structural descriptions of archetypal collapse when initiation and integration have not occurred. This eight-module course explores the masculine psyche through Jung's analytical psychology, examining the animus, the process of individuation, and the critical role of masculine initiation, which is largely absent in contemporary culture. You'll study the Pan archetype as pre-solar masculine foundation, explore mythological patterns in Zeus, Odin, Hermes, and Dionysus, and understand how the absence of ritual eldership creates what Jung called inflation: the ego's identification with archetypal power it has not earned and cannot contain. The course addresses the hieros gamos, partnership versus domination models, and the emergence of masculine energy in service to life rather than ego.

I highly recommend Dr. James Newell’s courses. Upon completion of my certificate in Depth Psychology I had gained the confidence, focus and knowledge to support my success in my current PhD program in Jungian and Archetypal Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. James is a knowledgeable and caring instructor with an engaging teaching style. All of the Depth Psychology Alliance courses I took: Introduction to Jungian Psychology, Active Imagination, Fairy Tales, Dreams, and many more, were phenomenal and I am most grateful for the opportunity to study with James.

Nirlap Bettenhauser, student
This is an outstanding educational program where one can learn multiple areas of Jungian Psychology. These courses are very well structured with an appropriate course load and high quality texts. Plus the price is incredibly reasonable. The courses I have taken with Dr. Newell have been intellectually engaging and have perfectly prepped me for my graduate studies in psychoanalysis. Not something I expected to receive from the academy, but very grateful I did.
A serious psychological inquiry into masculine development
This course examines what mature masculine energy requires and why its absence proves so costly. Learn the difference between boyhood grandiosity and genuine life-serving strength, understand why boys don't become men without initiation, and explore how depth psychology illuminates both personal development and cultural patterns. Drawing on Jung's writings and cross-cultural mythology, each module builds an understanding of masculine psychology that is both practical and theoretical.
