This course explores the effects of traumatic experiences from the perspective of Jungian psychology. Learn methods to integrate Jung’s insights, the work of Donald Kalsched, as well as contemporary research into treatment of post-traumatic stress.
Learn how Jungians understand trauma and its relationship to the process of individuation
Healing trauma involves healing memories stored in the body and the central nervous system as well as understanding and processing psychological complexes stored in the unconscious psyche
From childhood abuse and neglect, to automobile accidents, sexual assault, war, and the cumulative effects of the day to day stress of contemporary life, trauma can be found at the root of many of our modern day maladies. Until we begin to understand our own traumas and the traumas that impact our friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens of the world, we will remain at a loss when we try to understand why people behave the way they do. Over the last thirty years there has been an enormous amount of research done in the area of trauma and post-traumatic stress of which many Jungians remain unaware. At the same time, researchers into the neurobiology of trauma, as well as cognitive and other mainstream trauma therapies, remain unaware of the valuable insights available through the Jungian approach to trauma. In this course we will bring many of these ideas together and survey the field of trauma and trauma treatment from a Jungian perspective.

I highly recommend Dr. James Newell’s courses. Upon completion of my certificate in Depth Psychology I had gained the confidence, focus and knowledge to support my success in my current PhD program in Jungian and Archetypal Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. James is a knowledgeable and caring instructor with an engaging teaching style. All of the Depth Psychology Alliance courses I took: Introduction to Jungian Psychology, Active Imagination, Fairy Tales, Dreams, and many more, were phenomenal and I am most grateful for the opportunity to study with James.

This is an outstanding educational program where one can learn multiple areas of Jungian Psychology. These courses are very well structured with an appropriate course load and high quality texts. Plus the price is incredibly reasonable. The courses I have taken with Dr. Newell have been intellectually engaging and have perfectly prepped me for my graduate studies in psychoanalysis. Not something I expected to receive from the academy, but very grateful I did.
