Course Format Note

The courses in this certificate pathway are based on recordings from earlier live Depth Psychology Academy classes. The recordings preserve the full teaching content of the original courses, but students may hear occasional references to live discussions, earlier assignment structures, previous course platforms, or earlier certificate plans.

For the current self-paced version of the Advanced Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology, students should follow the materials as they appear on the Academy site. Each course includes the current lessons, readings or materials, quizzes, and completion steps. Certificate completion is based on the current course structure, the individual course completion requirements, and the final Advanced Certificate completion process described in the pathway guide.

This certificate recognizes completion of a substantial independent-study program in Jungian and depth psychology through the Depth Psychology Academy. It may be especially meaningful for therapists, counselors, educators, artists, writers, clergy, spiritual directors, and serious lay students who want to document sustained study in symbolic and historical approaches to depth psychology. This certificate does not constitute professional licensure, clinical certification, academic credit, psychotherapy training, Jungian analytic training, or authorization to practice therapy or counseling.

Recommended Preparation

This pathway is advanced, but it is not restricted to students who have completed the first certificate.

The Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology is the preferred preparation for this advanced pathway. Students who have completed the first certificate will have already studied Jungian concepts, applied Jungian psychology, dreams, and active imagination, all of which provide an important foundation for this deeper symbolic and historical work. Students who already have a working knowledge of Jungian concepts, dreams, symbolic interpretation, and active imagination may also be ready to begin here. This pathway is especially suited for students who are ready to move beyond introductory concepts into sustained study of myth, fairy tale, alchemy, culture, history, and the symbolic life of the unconscious.

    James Newell is an educator, counselor, personal coach, professional musician, and the director of the Depth Psychology Alliance. James earned his master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling and Theology from Vanderbilt University Divinity School, with a focus on Jungian psychology. He earned his doctorate in History of Religions from the Vanderbilt University Graduate School of Religion. James has taught online and face to face courses for Central Michigan University, Western Kentucky University, Excelsior College, Thomas Edison State University, and other institutions.
