Where Should I Begin?

Some students come to the Academy with no previous background in Jungian psychology. Others are therapists, counselors, coaches, educators, clergy, artists, writers, musicians, scholars, or reflective learners who are looking for a more coherent path through dreams, symbols, myth, active imagination, and the unconscious.

Wherever students begin, the Academy is organized around a simple principle: begin with the foundations, deepen through symbolic and historical study, and apply depth psychological insight to lived human experience.

Students may wish to begin here if:

  • They are new to Jungian or depth psychology.
  • They want to understand dreams, symbols, myth, and the unconscious.
  • They are therapists, counselors, coaches, educators, or spiritual directors seeking deeper psychological perspective.
  • They are artists, writers, musicians, scholars, clergy, or reflective learners interested in psyche, creativity, religion, and the symbolic life.
  • They have already taken one or more Academy courses and want to know what to study next.
  • They are considering one of the Academy certificate pathways and want to understand the recommended sequence.


The Academy courses may be taken individually, but they can also be followed as part of a larger learning path.


Three Ways to Enter the Academy

Begin

Students who are new to Jungian or depth psychology may wish to begin with courses that introduce the central ideas, language, and structure of Jung’s psychology.

The Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology is the clearest guided starting point for students who want a structured introduction to Jungian psychology, dreams, active imagination, and applied depth psychological reflection.

Deepen

Students who are ready for deeper symbolic and historical study may explore courses in mythology, fairy tales, alchemy, and the history of depth psychology.

These courses form the basis of the Advanced Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology. This advanced pathway continues foundational Jungian study through symbolic systems, archetypal narrative, transformation symbolism, and the wider intellectual history of depth psychology.

Apply

Students interested in bringing depth psychological insight into healing, relationship, trauma, addiction, caregiving, clinical work, spiritual care, or personal reflection may wish to explore courses that connect Jungian psychology with lived human experience.

Certificate Pathways

Depth Psychology Academy currently offers two guided certificate pathways.

These certificates recognize completion of substantial independent-study programs through the Academy. They do not constitute professional licensure, clinical certification, academic credit, psychotherapy training, or formal analytic status.

Students may take individual courses without pursuing a certificate. The certificate pathways are offered for students who want a more coherent sequence, a clear course of study, and a formal record of completion.


Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology

The Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology brings together the Academy’s four core introductory courses into a coherent sequence of study.

The four required courses are:


 This sequence moves from basic Jungian concepts, to their application in lived experience, to two central ways of engaging the unconscious: dreams and active imagination.

Students may take these courses individually, but together they form the clearest pathway into the central ideas and practices of Jungian psychology.

Suggested Study Order

  1. Begin with Jung 101 for the basic structure and vocabulary of Jung’s psychology.
  2. Continue with Jung 102 to see how Jungian ideas illuminate lived experience.
  3. Move into Jung and Dreams to study dreams as symbolic expressions of the unconscious.
  4. Complete Jung and Active Imagination as a more advanced method of entering into conscious relationship with unconscious images.


Students who have already completed one or more of these courses may enter the pathway at the appropriate point. The recommended order is offered as guidance, not as a rigid requirement.

Advanced Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology

The Advanced Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology continues foundational Jungian study through mythology, fairy tales, alchemy, and the history of depth psychology.

The four required courses are:


This pathway is designed for students who are ready to move more deeply into symbolic interpretation, archetypal pattern, transformation symbolism, and the broader intellectual history of depth psychology.

The Certificate in Foundational Depth Psychology is the preferred preparation for this advanced pathway. Students who already have a working knowledge of Jungian concepts, dreams, symbolic interpretation, and active imagination may also be ready to begin here.

Suggested Study Order

  1. Begin with Jung 105: Jung and Mythology to enter the world of mythic imagination, archetypal patterns, sacred narratives, and cultural images.
  2. Continue with Jung 106: Jung and Fairy Tales to study symbolic narrative in a more compact form, with special attention to archetypal conflict, development, and transformation.
  3. Move into Jung 107: Jung and Alchemy to explore one of Jung’s most important symbolic traditions for understanding individuation, transformation, and the union of opposites.
  4. Complete Jung 200: History of Depth Psychology as a capstone course that places Jungian psychology within the wider history of the unconscious, psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, and depth psychology as a field.


Students may take these courses individually, but together they form a coherent advanced pathway through symbolic and historical depth psychological study.

For Students Who Already Own One or More Courses

Students who have already enrolled in individual Academy courses do not need to start over.

Any required course already purchased through the Academy counts toward the relevant certificate pathway once the course requirements have been completed and the individual course certificate has been issued.

Students who already own one or more required courses may continue by enrolling in the remaining courses individually, or by contacting the Academy for guidance about the most appropriate next step.

The bundle is often the simplest enrollment option for students beginning a pathway from the start. Students who already own one or more courses may still be able to complete the pathway without repurchasing courses they already own.

Choosing a Path

Students do not need to know the whole path before beginning. A single course may be enough to begin meaningful study.

  3. Deepen through mythology, fairy tales, alchemy, and the history of depth psychology.
  4. Explore applied courses in healing, trauma, addiction, relationship, vocation, creativity and symbolic life.


Students who already have experience with Jungian psychology may wish to begin with a course that speaks directly to their interest, such as dreams, mythology, fairy tales, alchemy, or the history of depth psychology.
