Depth Psychology
History, Theory, and Practice
In this free introductory lesson we explore the history of depth psychology as an academic discipline. Depth psychology involves the introspective methods of depth psychology contrast with traditional behavioral and other approaches to psychology. The class concludes with a review of the history of depth psychology from ancestral healing practices to the contributions of early pioneers like Mesmer and Janet. The course will then move on to examine the foundational frameworks established by Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, and Carl Jung. You'll learn about later developmental theories as well, including Object Relations, Attachment Theory, and Self Psychology. Ultimately, in the full course you will learn how to synthesize these diverse perspectives, discovering how post-Freudian theories of early ego development perfectly complement Jung’s deeper focus on archetypes and the psychological development in the second half of life.
